Pre 18th century, the term Burlesque was used to describe humorous theatrical entertainment involving parody and satire and can be linked to the Italian ‘Commedia dell’arte’ of the 16th century.
In England during the 19th and 20th centuries Burlesque became a term for dramatic productions which made a mockery of traditional stage conventions whereas in 20th century America, Burlesque was used to describe Vaudeville style variety shows which had a strong emphasis on strip tease.
During the ‘Golden Age of Burlesque’, between the 1920’s and 1940’s, performers used elaborate costumes, sets, props and theatrical effects to deliver their mixture of suggestive and risqué dance, striptease, song, comedy and magic to packed theatres. Artists such as Gypsy Rose Lee and Sally Rand were celebrities of their time.
In 1960, Ann Corio, a Burlesque Queen of the 20’s and 30’s called her latest revue ‘This Was Burlesque’. Modern stripping had discarded the charm and comedy associated with Burlesque and the scene died out.
Since the early 1990’s, Burlesque has been enjoying an increasingly popular revival in America and across Europe thanks to the likes of Dita von Teese and Immodesty Blaize. Neo Burlesque attempts to recapture the charm, wit, variety, parody and glamour of the ‘Golden Age’ and lives on in the UK at nights hosted by The Whoopee Club and Wam Bam Club where the ‘tease’ has been put cheekily back into stripping!
